The Main Reasons Iodine supplementation is Essential cannot be overstated.

Thyroid disease is really iodine deficiency disease. Iodine is a trace mineral from food and is needed by every cell in the body. The body requires 12.5 mg/day of iodine for full sufficiency. Of that, the thyroid takes 6 mg/day, the breasts take 5 mg, and the other glands, including the ovaries, grab about 2 mg and yet the recommended daily Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) is a woefully inadequate at 150 micro grams.

Iodine is necessary for the proper function of many of the body’s tissues including the breasts, pancreas, brain, stomach, adrenal glands, skin, salivary glands, and cerebral spinal fluid. Some studies have shown that iodine deficiency leads to a higher risk of developing various cancers, especially of the breast, prostate, and ovaries. Humans tolerate large doses of iodine. The ultra-high doses that were used a century ago are helpful in medical emergencies—specifically when facing antibiotic resistant infections, viruses and stubborn fungal and yeast infections. Iodine’s true role—making up more than 1/2 of the body’s Immune System—is not well understood. Deficiencies in iodine have a great effect on the immune system and its response to infectious diseases

Radioactive iodine, or RAI, is given as a pill, to treat hyperthyroidism by gradually shrinking your thyroid—ultimately destroying the gland.  In fact, it is the most commonly used hyperthyroid treatment in the US.


The National Health and Nutrition Survey undertaken by the CDC showed iodine levels falling over 50% in the last 30 years. In 1940, the average American got 800 micrograms of iodine in their diet. In 1995 we averaged 135 micrograms, an 83% decline! The Japanese consume 89 times more iodine then Americans, due to their daily consumption of sea vegetables, and they have reduced rates of many chronic diseases, including the lowest rates of cancer in the world. Why is your oncologist so ignorant, why does your government not inform you, why do medical organizations and the medical press promote everything but iodine for the treatment and prevention of cancer?

Even at low dosages, iodine is a powerhouse. So effective is iodine that aerosols can be effective in sterilizing a room at levels not even detectable by humans. However, Dr. David Derry says, “Dietary iodine found in iodized salt is below the amounts needed to fill mucus defense roles. To protect themselves, people wishing to boost their defense against infections should use Iodine supplement in their diets. Why would people need the larger doses of iodine? Why have iodine levels fallen 50% in the last 30 years? As I pondered these questions, I came to the conclusion that the toxicity of modern life must be impacting iodine levels. It is well known that the toxic halides, fluoride and bromide, having a similar structure as iodine, can competitively inhibit iodine absorption and binding in the body. Because of the elevated levels of toxic halides in the environment and in the food supply, iodine levels have not only fallen but larger amounts of iodine are necessary to correct iodine deficiency as well as to promote a detoxifying effect of heavy metals.”

When treating life-threatening diseases we do not have months to fool around with low dosages. The anti-microbial process of iodine quickly kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, and various other microorganisms if a high enough dosage is used. We need to dial up iodine levels quickly when we use it to fight infections. Iodine can be taken internally in large quantities and will have the same effect internally as it does on external surfaces. In addition, as in breast cancer, we often need to get it concentrated to certain tissues or organs and we do that by painting the breasts with iodine.

Just to give you an idea of how high iodine dosages have been taken to in the past we have to revisit the 1930s when iodine was still a universal medicine, present in the US Pharmacopeia and was used at much higher dosages than anyone even dreams of using today thanks in large part to the UN CODEX Alimentarius initiatives. The usual dose for treatment was 300 mgs (46 drops of full strength Lugol’s) to 1 gm (1000 mg, 154 drops).

Dr. David Brownstein said, “After testing individuals and finding low iodine levels, I began to use smaller milligram amounts of iodine/iodide (6.25 mg/day). Upon retesting these individuals 1-2 months later, little progress was made. I therefore began using higher milligram doses (6.25-50 mg) to increase the serum levels of iodine. It was only with these higher doses that I began to see clinical improvement as well as positive changes in the laboratory tests.” Brownstein has sometimes used between 200 and 300 milligrams of iodine daily, with higher doses for more serious and difficult diseases.

“At 6 grams daily (which is 6 million micrograms/day or 6,000 milligrams/day!), a much higher dose, iodine has been used to cure syphilis, skin lesions, and chronic lung disease,” says Cousens. “From a larger physiological perspective, it is important to realize that the thyroid is only one gland of many glands and tissues that needs iodine. Other glands/organs/systems with high iodine uptake are the breasts, ovaries, cervix, blood, lymph, bones, gastric mucosal, salivary, adrenal, prostate, colon, thymus, lungs, bladder, kidney, and skin. Iodine is found and used in every hormonal receptor in the body.”

Iodine 129 and 131: what are the hazards?

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) officials calculated an annual thyroid dose of 40,000 microsieverts (or 4 REM) for infants under one year of age in California. Per the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services division of Radiation Emergency Medical Management division (REMM), a child’s dose of 5 REM is immediate grounds for evacuation and prophylactic measures. (REM does not specifically reference an infant dose) Thus, the projected government dose of 4 REM was 80% of the suggested evacuation rate.

Iodine-131, a radioactive isotope, is primarily taken up by the thyroid gland. It is a bio-mimicker. The thyroid gland requires iodine to function. In a nuclear accident large amounts of radioactive iodine-131 are released and this was certainly the case for Fukushima, especially in the early days. The thyroid gland is unable to differentiate between regular iodine and radioactive iodine and will uptake whatever chemical form it is presented with especially when one is already iodine deficient.

Iodine -129 – A Growing Radiological Risk

While we’ve all been led to believe that I-131 is no longer so much of a threat from Fukushima, (with it’s 8 day half-life) we have to also worry about the effects of another type of iodine and that’s I-129. I-129 is another isotope produced by the fission of Uranium-235. Within these fission products approximately 75% is I-131 and 25% is I-129. Iodine-129, although a result of nuclear fission in reactors, also occurs to a small extent in the upper atmosphere due to the interaction of high-energy particles with naturally-occurring xenon. Iodine-129 has a long half-life of ~15.7 million years, which makes this of significant concern when processing nuclear waste or when nuclear accidents occur.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency when I-129 or I-131 is ingested, some of it concentrates in the thyroid gland. The rest passes from the body in urine. Airborne I-129 and I-131 can be inhaled. In the lung, radioactive iodine is absorbed, passes into the blood stream, and collects in the thyroid. Any remaining iodine passes from the body with urine.

In the body, iodine has a biological half-life of about 100 days for the body as a whole. It has different biological half-lives for various organs: thyroid – 100 days, bone – 14 days, and kidney, spleen, and reproductive organs – 7 days. Long-term (chronic) exposure to radioactive iodine can cause nodules, or cancer of the thyroid.

All nuclear waste facilities, sites & reactors leak & off-gas all the time exposing 160 million Americans [1] to lethal radioactive toxins which according to the industry are acceptable looses in collateral damage.

In a news report by the Pacific Standard we see that there is now no remediation technology available for the significant quantities of iodine-129 that have already leaked into groundwater at nuclear weapons production locations, including the Hanford Site in Washington state. Meanwhile, France and England — which produce large proportions of their electricity via nuclear power — are reprocessing spent fuel and disposing of vast quantities of iodine-129 simply by dumping it in the ocean.

Ocean disposal of iodine-129 appears to have resulted in massive increases of radionuclide concentrations. Currents carry the British and French iodine-129 northward, and a 2003 Danish study found concentrations in the Kattegat strait between Denmark and Sweden increased six fold between 1992 and 2000. Concentrations of iodine-129 in some Arctic waters are 4,000 times their pre-nuclear era levels. Add to this the I-129 released from Fukushima and we should be aware that there is much to be concerned with.

Iodine Removes Fluoride From The Body And Serves As A Fluoride Detox

Studies have shown that iodine does displace and remove fluoride, though it is the heavier halogen. The scientific explanation of the halogen displacement suggests that iodine cannot displace fluoride because it is the heavier halogen.

The theory of halogen displacement is the element with the lighter atomic weight can displace the element with the heavier atomic weight, but not the other way around.

Principle of Halogen Displacement

Halogens are a group of five non-metallic elements that combine with hydrogen to make various forms of salts. These halogens are comprised of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine.

The atomic weight of these halogens are:

  • Fluorine: 18.99 u
  • Chlorine: 35.45 u
  • Bromine: 79.90 u
  • Iodine: 126.90 u
  • Astatine: 210 u

Fluorine is the lightest element while astatine is the heaviest element.

This displacement method seems logical but there is evidence that shows that displacement theory doesn’t work or it doesn’t work alone and there are other factors at work. Dr. Guy Abraham provided a letter[4] to the Townsend Letter journal that supported iodine’s ability to displace fluoride for urine excretion.

Iodine Does Displace And Remove Fluoride Through Urine

The letter addressed key points of his study and detailed how displacement occurred. Participants in the study were given iodine/iodide loading tests consisting of 2-3 tablets iodine/iodide tablets to determine its ability to displace other halogens. Baselines were determined for halide/halogen excretion without supplementation.

Using 3 iodine/iodide tablets, fluoride excretion increased 17.5 times and bromide excretion increased 18 times baseline. After 1 month fluoride excretion remained at 15 times baseline, and bromide excretion remained at 16 times baseline.

This evidence clearly showed that iodine was able to successfully displace fluoride and remove it from the body through urination, even though it was the heavier halogen.

David Brownstein also conducted a study[2] using iodine/iodide supplementation for the purpose of documenting its effects on fluoride displacement and removal. Brownstein’s study also supported iodine’s ability to displace and remove fluoride.

In fact, according to the world’s oldest and most prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, the additive is actually a neurotoxin and is classified in the same category as arsenic, lead, and mercury. Because it is commonly ingested through fluoridated water, certain foods, and commercial toothpastes, researchers believe that the additive is contributing to a worldwide “pandemic of developmental neurotoxicity” that results in disabilities such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and other cognitive impairments.

The report coincides with 2013 findings by a Harvard University meta-analysis which was funded by the National Institutes of Health. The researchers concluded that children in areas with highly fluoridated water have “significantly lower’ IQ scores than those who live in areas with low amounts of fluoride in their water supply. In addition, the Harvard website states that “extremely high levels of fluoride are known to cause neurotoxicity in adults, and negative impacts on memory and learning have been reported in rodent studies.” In addition, “little is known about the substance’s impact on children’s neurodevelopment.”


We all need the protection of iodine. The threat of radioactive iodine in the environment when ingested, tricks the body into absorbing the toxic iodine especially in iodine deficient populations. The Main Reasons Iodine supplementation is Essential cannot be overstated. The Intake recommendations for iodine and other nutrients are provided in the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) developed by the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (formerly National Academy of Sciences) [3]. DRI is the general term for a set of reference values used for planning and assessing nutrient intakes of healthy adults is 150mcg. for iodine. This falls way short of the 12.5mg we actually need for sufficient levels to fight infection and maintain overall health, especially in this increasingly toxic environment. The known side effects are catastrophic in light of iodine’s ability to displace fluoride (a known neurotoxin) in many public water systems and products under the color of protecting the public.

What is exposed here is the wrong these institutions impose by the harm and damage they are inflicting on the public at large with deficient DRI’s as well as deliberately preventing an effective means of displacing the neurotoxin fluoride. This is an assault which can be stopped and this brief summary is evidence needed to have fluoride removed from public consumption & iodine given the priority it deserves in our dietary fight for sufficient health to deal with toxins in our daily life.
