"The researchers claim they decided which is the real genome of SARS-CoV-2 by “consensus,” sort of like a vote. Again, different computer programs will come up with different versions of the imaginary “unicorn,” so they come together as a group and decide which is the real imaginary unicorn."

Plastic roads: The first plastic road is made in Mexico | Everyday Science

The 4-kilometer stretch of Guanajuato highway used 1.7 tonnes of reclaimed plastic

Over 300 million tons of Plastic produce every year but only 10% are recycled. More than 8 million tons of plastic ends up in our ocean. Dow finds a new way to prevent plastic pollution from polluting our oceans to turn hard plastic into more durable and longer-lasting road, called Plastic roads.

We are in a time of environmental crisis in which it is urgent to propose solutions and take actions to reduce the impact we are having on the world’s ecosystems.

The generation of plastic waste is one of the main pollution factors and that is why we need to spread recycling and make it custom since the use and reuse of these plastic materials helps in the reduction of garbage in our sanitary landfills and oceans.

With these environmental concerns in mind, Dow launched Plastic roads, the design, and the manufacture of modified asphalt from the use of recycled plastic material.

The first plastic road in the world is made with hard plastic and Elvaloy and is located in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, and its length is 2 km.

The plastic road project was carried out jointly with VISE, Surfax, Lasfalto, and Omnigreen and was supported by the Ministry of Communications and Transportation of Mexico.

It required almost a ton of plastic, that is, something close to 250 thousand flexible packages.

If an amount close to one ton of plastic was used for a 2 km road, it will be interesting to calculate and think about how much plastic pollution could be avoided in landfills and oceans if this strategy is no longer implemented only in Mexico, but on a global scale. The United States, Australia, India, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and many other countries have used plastic roads technology which can include plastic waste into an asphalt mix.

On the other hand, Dow ensures that this new plastic roads technology not only has a positive impact on the environment but also on the life of the roads, because the materials have up to 50% higher performance compared to traditional asphalt.

“This new technology not only offers a possible solution to the management of plastic waste, it also theoretically prolongs the life span of highways by 50% compared to conventional asphalt,”

Hopefully, in more corners of the planet it will be considered to implement asphalt made with plastic, because, due to the amount used for its manufacture, the benefits could be large-scale.

Dow Completes Roads Improved with Recycled Plastic

FREEPORT, TEXAS – February 26, 2019 – As part of Dow’s commitment to reducing plastic in the environment and delivering circular economy solutions through innovation, the company constructed two new polymer modified asphalt (PMA) roads by improving them with post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) at its Freeport, Texas facility. Both private roads—Plastics Road and Gulfstream Road—are now open for traffic.

Before this North America pilot, the company began improving roads with recycled plastic in Depok City, Indonesia in 2017 to help the Indonesian government reach its goal of reducing plastic waste in the ocean by 70 percent by 2025. Following that trial project’s success, Dow turned its attention to India, where it worked with KK Plastic Waste Management, Ltd., Rudra Environmental Solutions and two local governments to implement roads improved by plastic in the cities of Pune and Bangalore. Most recently, Dow began a collaboration with Siam Cement Group in Thailand to begin improving asphalt roads with plastic.

"I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is mass psychology....Although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated."

“Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so.
